It’s no surprise that most parents will do just about anything for their kids, but sometimes, parents’ dedication goes even further than expected. Such is the case of Tanya and Adam Phillips, parents of four who made a huge decision to ensure that their daughter, Honey-Rae, never felt alone or different.

18-month-old Honey-Rae was born with a large red birthmark on her right leg, stretching from her toes to her lower back. Her parents feared that, because of the birthmark, Honey-Rae would feel ostracized and alone later in her life.

So, these loving parents decided to make sure she wasn’t the only person with a birthmark. Both Tanya and Adam had their daughter’s full-leg birthmark replicated as tattoos.

It seems like an extreme move, but to Tanya and Adam, it was a perfectly natural choice. “Like any Mum I didn’t want her to be different.” Tanya told the Mirror, “I wanted her to be exactly the same as every other healthy child. And as much as the birthmark isn’t dangerous I knew it could have a huge impact on the rest of her life.”

For the first few months of her life, Honey-Rae’s parents kept her legs covered. But Tanya’s worst fears were confirmed when she took Honey-Rae shopping in the warmer weather, and the small girl was dressed in shorts. Tanya saw an elderly couple pointing at Honey-Rae’s leg and whispering, and she was distraught. So she and Adam both got tattoos down their legs to match Honey-Rae’s birthmark, so that Honey-Rae would feel proud and unashamed of her birthmark as she got older.

Today, Tanya, Adam, and Honey-Rae all match. And Honey-Rae, even though she’s still quite young, seems to like this fact.

“When the swelling went down, I showed Honey-Rae, and she gently touched it and smiled as she said “Match”, pointing to her own leg,” Tanya describes. The Phillips know that some people may think their decision extreme, but they see it simply as making sure their daughter feels a little less alone in the world.
