Deep Under The Sea, There Is Incredible Beauty You May Never Get To See

Deep beneath the sea are strange, tiny creatures going about their daily lives. They’re blooming, eating, and simply existing while we on the surface are totally unaware of them. Now, you can catch a glimpse of their small, quiet lives thanks to Italian filmmaker Sandro Bocci. His short, called “Meanwhile,” shows various sea creatures, including corals and sponges, using incredible macro time-lapse photography.

The clip’s vibrant colors and the slow, steady actions of its subjects remind us that while we’re living our comparatively frenetic lives on the surface, these creatures have their own lives and stories hidden from the rest of the world. It’s actually part of a larger project of Bocci’s, a film called Porgrave, which is still in the works.

Porgrave is apparently going to be completely non-verbal and will focus on the tiny, unseen things happening all around us. According to Bocci, the film will be “an experimental film orbiting scientific and philosophical reflections on time and space, and that through various shooting techniques, fields of magnification, and an exciting soundtrack, weaves a web between science and magic.” You can see more stills from the film here.

The magic of this short, besides its obvious visual beauty and psychedelic soundtrack, lies in the reminder that there is beauty, however strange and tiny, happening all around us. It’s also a nice way to remember that we’re not, in fact, the center of the universe. So the next time you’re taking a walk or going for a swim, remember that there’s an entire world around you, waiting for you to notice it.
