This Mysterious Hill Of Crosses In Lithuania Is Absolutely Stunning

The Hill of Crosses is exactly what it sounds like, but you still need to see it to believe it. Called Kryzių Kalnas in Lithuania (where the hill is located), this hill is a place of pilgrimage for all Lithuanians. Located just north of the city of Siauliai, the hill features crosses from many different decades–and I mean many.

Lithuanian citizens began erecting crosses on the hill after the peasant uprising in 1865 that freed their nation from Russia. By 1895, there were well over 100 crosses on the hill. Today, there are easily more than 100,000 crosses on the hill. As you can tell, the people put up crosses with even more vigor after freeing themselves from the Soviet Union.

Yeah, that sounds about right.

Apparently, the Soviets tried to remove all Christian imagery from the hill.

Well, all of that work was in vain.

Obviously, the hill is also a popular spot for non-Lithuanian Christians to visit.

Who wouldn’t want to check it out?

It’s said that on windy days, visitors are treated to a unique medley of wind blowing through the crosses.
