These Crumbling Military Fortifications Are Haunting Relics From A Violent Past

There are remnants of past wars scattered across the world. Old battlegrounds have a strange, eerie feeling about them. Many of them are now peaceful, silent, and sometimes beautiful. But violent memories still haunt these places. When you walk through a silent, old military fortification, you can just imagine the echoes of explosions and gunfire all around.

These battles and wars may be long over, but they have left their mark on these places. Now these fortifications, which soldiers on both sides relied on and resented, are relics of a violent past.

These are photos of fortifications from around Europe, which saw a great deal of violence on a huge scale from the early to mid 20th century.

Located along a coastline, fortifications like these were used to spot and defend against enemy ships.

Military construction like what you see below was used to slow down the movements of enemy vehicles and troops as they trekked across Europe.

It really is strange to see these buildings and barriers still standing, knowing that they were made and used in the middle of a massive war.

This bunker was more than likely used for machine gunners who were guarding a vital section of the line. Imagine being a soldier and finding one of these in your path.

Here’s another machine-gunner and look-out post now falling slowly into the sea.

These concrete cones would have stopped ships or other landing craft trying to make it to shore in their tracks. Running into these would have been a deadly mistake.

This concrete bunker/trench looks like it could’ve been used to shelter both soldiers and heavy artillery. The sound of artillery fire from bunkers like these could be heard from miles away.

These military fortifications are fascinating and haunting. But they do make me want to go out and see some of these war relics for myself.
