It’s no secret that trash collects in highly populated areas, and Covilhã, Portugal, is no exception. It’s an eyesore at best, and hazardous at worst. Sometimes, though, unexpected good can come of trash. Instead of letting them be forgotten forever in a landfill, Portugese street artist Artur Bordalo, who goes by the handle Bordalo II, collected countless items of trash to create something amazing.
The trash, which included tractor tires and corrugated metal along with all manner of other scrap material, was arranged carefully into a giant owl sculpture on the side of a building in Covilhã. The sculpture, called Owl Eyes was created for the city’s arts festival, WOOL, which seeks to promote the arts in urban spaces.
Bordalo is no stranger to creating works of art that make use of their environment. His work has included everything from large-scale scrap sculptures like Owl Eyes to smaller pieces incorporated into crosswalks, signs, sidewalks and even traffic lights.
