Beach goers at Raglan Beach, New Zealand, received quite the surprise when a bizarre, alien-looking creature washed up on the shore. Upon first glance, the creature looks like something out of a horror movie. However, the truth is much more benign.
What the…?! Imagine coming across this on the beach. I think I’d run at top speed in the opposite direction.
However, a closer at the creature reveals that it is actually many goose barnacles.
Goose barnacles are a type of stalked barnacle that likes to attach itself to various solid pieces of flotsam and jetsam in the ocean.
They might look pretty intimidating out in the open with their stalks exposed, but goose barnacles are harmless to humans. They are what’s known as filter feeders. This means that they filter the water around them for microscopic organisms.

I never heard of barnacles with stalks before this occurrence. I’m thankful that we humans are safe from their wrath, but I still can’t shake the feeling of how creepy they look.
